Best Practices

BBB+Brute

used e.g. by B3B33KUI team for 50+ participating students on lectures and multiple parallels of seminars.

  • BigBlueButton for lectures and seminars. Keep usual schedule.
  • Modify your materials reflecting different dynamics of on-line lectures. Try to be prepared even better then for standard frontal teaching.
  • Use A/B/C/D questions as many as you can. BBB nicely supports them and they keep listeners alive
  • Brute for uploading homeworks. Students may print something, solve problem on paper and upload to Brute.

How to record talk

  • It's possible to record your talk in the rooms: T2:D3-209, 309, C4-80, KN:E-107, 301 . More information. Example of the result (instructions used to prepare referenced video on ABClinuxu - in Czech only for now).
  • Digital lecture can be created with help of OpenBoard, screen casting application (eg. OBS Studio). A graphic tablet and good microphone is recommended. Example of the result. Spare microphones are available on K13133 secretary E-217.
  • OpenBoard can also help with annotating PDF documents/slides. App imports PDF, you can annotate and export back to PDF, works well.

How to add sound comentary into existing slides (Screencast)

BBB integrated with Brute

  • BigBlueButton is integrated into BRUTE (Course→Conference rooms). Every teacher can create a meeting room for her/his course, where attendees can be students or only teachers. Teachers are always moderators. The meetings can be recorded and the recordings are accessible from BRUTE several minutes after the end of the meeting.
  • Teacher-Moderator may lock users in a way they do not see each other, but the moderator sees them all, see the instructive video
  • Tutorial video for moderators (teachers) and viewers (students) are available. More videos are available on BigBlueButton page.
  • BBB recordings are available as
    • BBB/replay - viewable through browser, useful for asynchronous viewing
    • mp4 recordings - for download
    • annotated pdf - for download
  • Personal rooms - top-right user pull down menu
    • for teachers, teacher can also invite people outside university
    • for students, for student discussions
    • BBB is mainly for education; teacher→students communication. For many active bi-directional peer↔peer communications may be less effective/reliable than e.g. zoom.us.
  • For MacOSX users, it seems it works with Chrome better, more reliable than with Safari. Firefox not tested.

Online talk

  • Microsoft Teams is available for all CTU users. Web application is available but does not support all features. Desktop clients for Win/Mac/Linux are available. All participants need to have a Microsoft account. CTU people have it (e.g. kybicjan@cvut.cz). Instructions provided by SVTI.
Tutorial video for moderators (teachers) and viewers (students) are available. More videos are available on BigBlueButton page.
  • Google Hangouts Meet can be used for up to 250 participants now. Use faculty Google Apps account. Instructions provided by SVTI
  • Free videoconference service: https://meet.jit.si. Uses an open software https://jitsi.org. Contrary to other free services, it allows conferences of more than 4 people, and also displays more than 4 user videos. May be useful for students.
  • It's possible online streaming of talks in the rooms: T2:D3-209, 309, C4-80, KN:E-107, 301 . More information.
  • Slido manages questions from the audience - eases feedback. You combine streaming lectures (even from youtube) and use Slido for interaction.
  • Mumble group live voice meetings, initially developed by online games players for themselves. Uses Speex and other technologies specially optimized for low lag voice communication. Whole system is open-source, client installation (apt-get install mumble). Running server is easy on GNU/Linux systems as well (apt-get install apt-get install mumble-server). If you consider use of Mumble contact Pavel Pisa, test server is available on his school desktop/development PC.
